On Saturday 9th June 2012 my husband Abram died and I had to start again. I was 31.
I set about building a music organisation from scratch called the Abram Wilson charity. It took a few years to get going but between 2017 - 2023 I raised £1million towards music education and career development programmes to inspire connect and open doors to the music industry for young people from minoritised communities. Whilst I was at the helm we reached over 10,000 children, young people and emerging professional creatives.
This led me to publishing a children’s book with Little Tiger called ‘Becoming Brave’ which is the true story of how I came to meet Abram and what happened after he died. I never planned to be a children’s author.
I later went on to buy my first house at the grand old age of 43 after having made myself voluntarily homeless for three years during a global pandemic. Because of the sector I’d chosen to work in I never thought I’d be a home owner.
I fell in love (again) with my first love from my twenties (for real!). I’m now getting to know his son and may end up being a parent after all. Something else I thought would never happen.
My life is very different to what it once was and I’ve been able to experience many special and magical moments because Abram passed away. I will always miss him. I will always love him. But I’m also very grateful to him for the life he gave me and continues to give me.
I’ve since stepped down as CEO of the Abram Wilson charity and I’m building something from scratch (again!).
This weekly update is a peek into my mind (and world) as I figure it out (again!).
